When was the last time you took a day off? A weekend? A day without work? A holiday? A day relaxing with family and friends, away from work, away from the demands of work, a day without thinking about work? A day without producing anything and not feeling guilty about it?
When was the last time you had a Sabbath? That’s what we’re talking about, a sabbath. A seventh day of rest. It used to be honored in Western culture, before we discovered the wonders of seven day shopping. It`s part of the Ten Commandments. According to the Bible, it`s part of God’s law that was written for our good, for our benefit, for Our Liberty. The concept of Sabbath is the foundation of the year of Jubilee. A day of rest, one in seven. No work, no responsibility, a day of doing nothing.
Jubilee is an amplified sabbath, the day of rest transformed into a year of rest, and extended to the economy. How’s your personal economy? Are you a slave driver, abusing yourself, working yourself to death, never giving yourself a break?
The following infographic, “Workaholism in America” illustrates why America needs a Jubilee. The US is the only nation in the Americas that doesn’t have a minimum work week or legally mandated vacation time. Like hamsters running on a treadmill going nowhere Americans are working harder and longer. Some even work 365 days of the year, not relaxing on the few national holidays. Is this you?
It’s time for you to enjoy a Sabbath, a day off. It’s time to have a personal Jubilee.
Do yourself a favor. Take a day off this weekend, actually make it a weekend. Don’t work. Spend some time with your family, your friends, your children, your parents. Give yourself a break. Party. Celebrate. Go out on a date, take your family out for a meal, have a good time, reflect on what you are thankful for. “The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath”. This isn’t religious legalism we’re talking about, its about liberty. Give yourself some liberty from work. Relax. You’re a child of God, you deserve a day off. Go to a house of worship this Sunday. If you’re Jewish, get to the Synagogue this Saturday. And break repetitious patterns that are boring you, sapping your energy. Break the stress. Do something different. Explore. Get to know your neighbors.
In Genesis it says that God rested on the seventh day. It also says that we are his children and therefore are entitled to a day of rest as well. Be kind to yourself. Take a day off. Have a Jubilee.
