The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord … is upon me because He has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those that are oppressed, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord. – Isaiah 61
With these words, the prophet Isaiah, speaking as a royal herald of the King of Kings, proclaimed an empowering of the Spirit to bring “good news” to the poor and oppressed, and release them from every type of bondage and enslavement.
Centuries later, Jesus, at the very beginning of his ministry, stood up in his own home town of Nazareth, and declared that these words were coming true, that this gracious liberation was beginning now, just as the people heard his words being spoken.
“Good news to the poor” and the proclamation of “the acceptable year of the Lord” refer to the ancient Year of Jubilee. This was a special year (legislated in the Bible in Leviticus 25), that occured in the 50th year, that came once to every generation.
Announced with a trumpet blast, liberty and release from debt were proclaimed throughout the land. Slaves were set free. Debts of the poor were cancelled. Those who had been depressed into poverty, who had lost their inheritance were commanded to return home to their families and take back their lost property. It was a year of new beginnings, an economic recovery for everyone in the land. It was the restoration of the peoples’ spiritual and economic inheritance.
This is the theme of the Jubilee!
Today, as the twentieth century has drawn to a close, and we have entered the new millenium, many are waking up to the fact that we need a new movement for life and liberty, a fresh way of thinking, and practical solutions to transcend the ongoing economic collapse.
Jubilee is an idea whose time has come, a reality that we need today.
The mission announced by Isaiah and Jesus is the same mission that has been entrusted to us today: to proclaim good news to the poor, to announce release from bondage of every type, to proclaim the “acceptable year of the Lord”. To cancel debts and return to our inheritance.
This web site, In the Spirit of Jubilee, is a witness to the emerging jubilee. We invite you to sound the trumpet, to participate in an adventure in justice.
